wegen den icons würde ich eher auf nen icon-fw wie font-awsome setzten. das ist modern , spart speicher und lässt sich easy "einfärben".
was den skin angeht, so wäre zb im footer oder oben links ein "theme-changer" eine nette geste ;-)
